Obit for Ella Gwyn Gentry Jackson Ella Gwyn Gentry Jackson died peacefully at her home in Cherokee, NC, on February 4, 2021, with her daughters and her grandson with her. Gwynn was born on February 18, 1933, in Haleyville, AL, to the late David Marion Gentry and Hester Leigh Shoemake Gentry. The family moved to Heard County, GA, and it was there that she met Bruce Kennith Jackson. They were married for 64 years. Shortly after they married, Kennith joined the U. S. Air Force and for the next 20 years she served as a military wife and mother as she, and later on, the girls followed him to new assignments across the United States and Japan. Kennith’s service included the Korean War and three tours in Viet Nam. Gwyn, like so many military wives, adjusted to the many moves required of them and always made a home for the family wherever they happened to be stationed. During that time, she found various jobs to occupy her time but one of her favorites was working at Mercy Hospital in California. After retirement in1974, they moved back to Centralhatchee, GA. When Kennith went to Cherokee, NC, to help a friend of his, he finally persuaded Gwyn that those mountains were where they needed to be and together they built their retirement home in Cherokee, NC. Kennith once said that he dreaded hearing the words “I have an idea” because he knew that meant he had to build something, repair something, renovate something, or a new flower bed was on his “honey-do” list. She is survived by her daughters, Pam (Mike) Hatchett, Tualatin, OR, and Kathy (Jeff) Tague, Omaha, NE. Six grandchildren Dylan Morgan and Kyle Morgan, Cherokee, NC, Ashley (Travis) Hatchett, Portland, OR, Colby Hatchett, Tualatin, OR, Kennith (Becky) Bounds of Omaha, NE, Katie (Tom) Murnan, Omaha, NE, special niece Ellen Todd Hill, four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Brayden, Kyler and Harrison. She is also survived by two sisters, Jackie Roberts, Atlanta, GA, and Ruby Wiggins (John), Roopville, GA, brother-in-law, Malcolm Jackson (Estelle), and sister-in-law, Agnes Jackson, Centralhatchee, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bruce Kennith Jackson, daughter Lisa Jackson, three sisters Clarice Crumbley, Johnnie Coleman, and Janice Todd, brother Jimmy Gentry, and brother-in-law Everette Jackson. Because of the Covid pandemic, the family will have a memorial service at a later date. Longhouse Funeral Home of Cherokee, North Carolina is in charge of the arrangements.
